Researching The Company You Are Interviewing For: What should you be looking for?
It’s that time again – job hunting season! You’re ready for some change in your life and eager to see how your next chapter will unfold. Maybe you’re just in a dry season and want something new in your life, or maybe you’re inspired to take the leap into a new career. Whatever the reason is, you know that you’re about to tackle the job search. Researching companies is a vital step when starting your hunt. Here is what you should be looking for:
General Company Knowledge
It’s always important to do research on the company before you interview – for your sake and the interviewer’s sake. You want to make sure that you have a general idea of what you are getting into. Your interviewer also wants to know that you are interested and even passionate about the position you’re applying for. Make sure you review the company’s website and look at the “about” section to familiarize yourself with the company’s mission, values, and history.
Company Culture
There’s a high chance that the interviewer will ask you why you applied for the job. They may also follow-up that question and ask what was appealing about the company. It’s wise to give specific answers. For example, a common determining factor for both employees and employers is if the candidate will fit into the company culture. Do your research and see what you can find regarding the company’s culture. If it’s a good match, then definitely mention this in your interview. Referring to keywords they use in their website is also a bonus!
Conversation Starters
At the end of the interview, the employer will ask you if you have any questions. If you do not come up with questions, then the interviewer may think that you’re not that interested in the position. This is your time to shine! When you’re researching, look for possible topics that may open up conversation and show that you are truly interested in both the company and position.
